Filtered water vs tap water: what’s the difference?

Have you ever wondered what makes filtered water and tap water so different? Or can you barely tell the difference at all? Is UK tap water safe?

In short, yes. It’s true – we in the UK are very fortunate to have safe, drinkable tap water. But that’s just the sticking point: what do we mean by ‘safe’ and is this alone good enough to justify drinking from the tap? The UK is up there with the best of them when it comes to tap water quality; policies such as the Drinking Water Directive ensuring strict quality control and adherence to minimum standards to guarantee uncontaminated water sources.

Further, the UK has its own dedicated water inspectorate (DWI) with a rigorous set of strict quality standards designed to improve and manage levels of:

  • Pesticides
  • Nitrates
  • Heavy metals such as lead and copper
  • Microorganisms

But while UK tap water is considered among the ‘safest’ in the world, it can’t be ignored that these chemicals still exist within the water supply and causes concern for many, prompting them toward making the change to filtered water. UK tap water can consist of up to 14 different chemicals, from chlorine to lead and even other people’s pharmaceuticals and hormones. In fact, while the DWI has not recommended any action be taken as of yet, a Brunel University study went as far as to suggest “Every time you enjoy a cool, clear glass of tap water, you could be drinking a cocktail of other people’s second-hand medications”, noting that one tested river alone “contained 45 different prescribed drugs, including the anti-epileptic medication carbamazepine”.

Plus, tap water can taste like choline, and let’s be honest, that’s just gross. Chlorine is for pools – period.

How is filtered water better for you?

As we’ve already deduced, chlorine-flavoured water is nasty and we’re not so hot on the idea of our drinking water being sprinkled with chemicals either. Filtering can banish both of these problems; the clue’s in the name as all the toxins, bad flavours and impurities are removed! The benefits don’t stop here either, as purified water also does wonders for our health with skin hydration, nutrient absorption, detoxification, and improved digestion amongst its many accolades

Filtered water benefits

  • Removes Chlorine

Tap water sources use chlorine to prevent contamination with germs and microorganisms from the water. While good for decontamination, chlorine can prove harmful to our health as it presents an increased risk of cancer. Filtering your water removes both the chlorine and its health adversities as it filters out the chlorine leftover from UK water filtration systems.

  • Better for the Environment

Many people turn to filtered bottled water in an effort to upgrade from tap water without realising the harm this imposes on the world around us. In America alone, 17 million barrels of oil are used to produce a year’s worth of bottled water and that doesn’t even include the carbon emissions created as a result or the sheer volume of single-use plastic bottles that end up in landfills. When you filter your water, you are able to get it straight from the source. Investing in a reusable water bottle can save you money in the long run as it cuts out the need for disposable bottles, and therefore saves the environment from the negative impact of mass production of another plastic bottle being thrown away.

  • Tastes so much better

While drinking tap water is safe, we all know it tastes pretty bad due to the chemicals used to treat it! Don’t compromise on taste. Purified water is downright delicious; fresher and purer, water filtration removes the chlorine and bacteria that can make tap water taste flat, tasteless, metallic, or even chemical. How sad for those people who say water doesn’t taste of anything – they clearly haven’t lived the filtered life!

  • Makes better brews

Filtering your water removes all the bad stuff from your H20, leaving you not just with delicious water but better-tasting brews too! Using filtered water to make your teas and coffees significantly decreases limescale buildup in your coffee pots and cafetières, as well as removing the contaminants which alter and impact the flavour of your favourite drinks. You deserve better than a mediocre cup o’ joe – treat yourself right!

  • Improves Digestion

Filtered water improves healthy mineral content which in turn improves and promotes healthy digestion. When you are properly hydrated with  purified water, your body can more easily transport and process these nutrients and minerals, giving your body the benefits and nutrition it deserves. These nutrients will not only make you feel more alert, awake, and fresh, but your body will also be able to process soluble fibre more easily. Remember: your body is a temple – worship it.

  • Saves money

Filtered water is so much more cost-efficient than buying bottled water. Investing in a reusable, BPA-free water bottle – such as our BIBO fizz bottles – and refilling it across the day eliminates the need for buying expensive bottled water. The BIBO Classic costs as little as 15p per day to run, and seeing as it can deliver 7 litres of chilled water and 15 litres of hot water per hour, the numbers speak for themselves!
