We’re constantly being told to stay hydrated and to drink water, but why? What are the actual health benefits of drinking water? Approximately 60% of our body is made up of water, as is around 71% of the planet’s surface, so it must be pretty important to keep it topped up!
We’ve done our research to uncover exactly how drinking water impacts your body and wellbeing. You might want to go and get a refill after reading them.
Health benefits of drinking water
- Increases oxygen flow
While our bodies are 60% water, our blood is made up of 90% H2O. Therefore it is vital we drink water to keep these levels where they should be; more water, more blood, and thus more oxygen transported around your body. Your body is a temple – treat it like one!
- Gives your skin a healthy glow
You don’t have to scroll through many Instagram profiles or flick through endless magazines before seeing a celebrity reveal the secret to their perfect skin: drink water – and lots of it. As well as leaving you with more naturally moisturised skin, drinking water can reduce puffiness, balance pH levels, and one University study by Missouri-Columbia even found that “drinking two cups of water increased blood flow to the skin, [helping to] even out your skin tone and complexion.”
- Boosts your energy
It’s no secret that not drinking enough water makes you feel sluggish. Active.com explains the science well as to why this is: “Dehydration leads to fatigue because it impacts the flow of oxygen to the brain and causes your heart to work harder to pump oxygen to all your bodily organs, making you more tired and less alert.” And so the equation goes YOU + WATER = ENERGY! In fact, a test carried out by employees at Marie Clare where participants drank a gallon of water per day led to many reporting how they felt full of beans during the experiment. One participant shared how she “noticed huge improvements in [her] mood and energy levels after the first night of the challenge, and by day three, [she] felt less lethargic, more alert, and was even able to focus a bit more clearly on tasks.” Sounds pretty good if you ask us!
- Turbocharges your metabolism
You best believe it: research by Healthline reported that drinking 17 ounces (0.5 liters) of water increases resting metabolism by 10–30% for about an hour. Further, this calorie-burning boost may be even greater if you drink icy cold water, as your body uses energy to heat it up to body temperature – pretty nifty, right?
- Aids digestion
Filtered water improves healthy mineral content which in turn improves and promotes healthy digestion. When you are properly hydrated with filtered and purified water, your body can more easily transport and process these nutrients and minerals, giving your body the benefits and nutrition it deserves. These nutrients will not only make you feel more alert, awake, and fresh, but your body will also be able to process soluble fibre more easily. Want to see more benefits of filtered water? Easy tips and tricks to help you drink more water:
- Get an environmentally friendly water bottle
Investing in a sturdy water bottle to have by your side throughout the day is a great way to ensure you’re staying hydrated and alert. You won’t have to journey to the kitchen as often for a top-up and you’ll soon find that drinking water will become an unconscious action! Plus reaching for a reusable bottle isn’t just good for you but for the environment too; not only will it save you money in the long run as it cuts out the need for disposable bottles, but it will also save the environment from the negative impact of mass production of another plastic bottle being thrown away. If you’re a fizzy drink fanatic and can’t bear the thought of still water, jazz it up! Why not try simply adding fruits to infuse your H2O such as lemons, limes, or berries for a fruity hit?
